The teachings given by the mysterious (and maybe fictional) Colonel Bradford who first taught the '5 Tibetan Rites' (also known simply as 'The '5 Tibetans') include insights and exercises for deepening the voice in order to use those vibrations to activate the energy centres (the chakras) more effectively.

Book 2 of the Secret of the Fountain of Youth has many articles explaining the principles behind the main exercises and also explaining the supplementary teachings.

"The Tibetan monks Colonel Bradford met in his travels used chanting as a powerful tool for lowering the voice. "The lamas chant in unison, sometimes for hours, in a low register. The significance of this is not the chanting itself or the meaning of the chant's words. It is the vibration of their voices and its effect on the seven vortexes," says Colonel Bradford."

The book also describes Laurel Elizabeth Keyes' discovery of her "natural body voice" through an act of spontaneous, cathartic toning:
"Standing alone in the seminar room Keyes noticed a sensation in her throat and chest, "as though a force were rising, wanting to be released in sound". The force had its own volition; when it erupted through her voice into a myriad of sounds, it soared like a bird that had been caged all its life, flying "in delighted abandonment, effortlessly, free as artesian water flows from the ground," says Keyes. It wasn't her personal voice, but rather the voice of her physical body, expressed only now for the first time, liberated from mental direction and emotional suppression. "Each time I toned," explained Keyes, "my body felt exhilarated, alive, as it had never felt before. It appeared to cleanse the entire body, releasing tensions and congested areas."
A psychic told Keyes the tone was like a swirling movement around her uterus that drew up magnetic currents from the Earth through her feet and limbs, rising in a spiral of light before release through the throat."
"Toning assists healing from the inside out, said Keyes, who devoted the rest of her life to teaching people to tone for self-healing until her death. For good health, we should take a "tone bath" every day, letting our voice "express its freedom.""

Suggestions given in the book include:
"Be open to the idea that your body has sounds it wants to make. that your body wants to speak through sound. You have to trust yourself that this is not silly, stupid, or embarrassing. Consider it an experiment."
"Allow the sound to go where it wishes, to be as loud, quiet, harsh, gentle, musical, or discordant as it wishes. This free-form sound will energetically sweep your chakras and sonically cleanse them. Most likely you will feel a sigh after perhaps a few minutes of toning."
